::: Metal :::

Metal roofing has truly come full circle during the past century.  From being a popular roofing material in the early 20th century to being replaced by cheaper materials such as asphalt shingles during the past several decades, to emerging once again as the premier roofing system for commercial buildings and homes.  The future looks bright for metal roofing, and there are several trends that are fueling the growth.

1st—Recent innovations in metal roofing paint systems and coating technology have significantly enhanced performance.  The vast majority of today’s metal roofs use a Galvalume coated steel substrate which virtually eliminates worries about rust and corrosion.  And just as important, paint systems now have outstanding resistance to fading, chalking, and cracking under the most stringent conditions.  These paint systems use cutting edge technology and inorganic pigments to provide the maximum protection against harmful UV rays.

2nd—Metal roofing is tough.  When it comes to wind and weather resistance, metal roofing stands alone.  Union’s metal roofing meets the toughest wind, fire, and impact codes in the country.  Your metal roof will probably outlast you.  Most metal roofs last 3 to 4 times longer than an asphalt shingle roof.

3rd—Choosing metal roofing can improve the environment for future generations.  In this regard, metal roofing meets the criteria of recycled content, recyclability, and energy efficiency.  Metal roofing is one of the most energy efficient roofing systems available and tests have shown that it can save you up to 40% on cooling costs. In addition, it’s not asphalt based like shingles, which means its production doesn’t continue to fuel our country’s biggest addiction… oil.

::: Slate :::

Slate has been used for centuries to create beautiful roofs, renowned for resisting the assaults of rain, wind, and snow. With unique textures, soft colors and unmatched durability, it is the perfect marriage of practicality and beauty, enhancing any environment. Walker Brown Roofing uses slate that is ASTM Grade S-1 quality ensuring durability and structural performance for a lifetime. Slate is a natural product and like fingerprints, no two pieces are exactly alike… slight variations will occur in texture, thickness and shading.

One of the appealing characteristics of slate is the wide variety of natural colors. Roofing slate is classified in three different groups: “unfading”, “semi-weathering” and “weathering” to indicate the degree of color change that can be expected. Unfading means that over time the slate will have essentially no weather tones. The slate might lighten or deepen in color and may have varying tones produced during prolonged exposure to the elements. Semi-weathering slate will change 10% to 25%, whereas weathering slate will change 30% or more. This weathering continues to some degree throughout the life of the slate but does not diminish the longevity of the material. Walker Brown ROofing can show you a full range of creative choices that will provide your roof with an enduring beauty that cannot be matched by man-made alternatives.

Durability: Slate has withstood the test of time. This 500 million year old stone is impervious to severe climatic conditions. Slate is a hard, dense stone whose structural integrity has withstood the rigors of ASTM testing and is fast becoming a popular choice in the architectural world. The intrinsic value of slate as a supreme roofing material can be attributed to the following qualities:

• Last a lifetime
• Noncombustible
• Resistance to acid
• Environmentally friendly
• Low maintenance
• Fire proof
• Non staining
• Impermeable to moisture

Design Considerations: Whether you choose the diminishing course of traditional random slating, or the more regular appearance of sized or patterned slates, Camara slate will enhance any roof with character and visual appeal of a high-quality natural material.

TEXTURES:
Standard texture roofs are composed of slate 3/16” to 1/4” thick and are either uniform standard length and width, or one length and random widths laid to line. The texture of the slate is moderately smooth.
Rough texture roofs utilize slates which have a varying thickness and whose external surface is rugged in appearance.
Graduated roofs have irregular features of the rough texture roof but has even greater variations in thickness and size. The slates are installed so that the thickest and longest are placed at the eaves and then the pieces gradually and proportionately diminish in size until the ridges are reached. Slate from this type can be obtained in any combination of thickness from 1/4” to 1”.

::: Wood Shake & Shingle :::

For looks, it is hard to beat a wood shingle roof. Over time it weathers out to a gray or soft silver that seems to root the house to the landscape. Several species are used: Western Red Cedar, Alaskan Yellow Cedar and Eastern White Cedar. Shingles are relatively smooth and cut to a uniform thickness, although they vary in width. Wood shakes are thicker and rougher, being split rather than sawn from the logs. Wood roofs are meant to breathe and will be laid over a substrate that allows air to circulate behind them.

Walker Brown Roofing prefers to use pre-treated wood shingles and shakes which will require no maintenance. However, depending on your wood selection some periodic maintenance my be required—typically in the form of washing to remove any mildew or moss, and then re-oiling with a clear wood finishing product. A properly installed and maintained wood roof should last at least 30 to 50 years.

::: Copper :::

Copper has been used as a beautiful water-proof metal roofing material since ancient times. It gives those historic buildings their greenish roofs and domes. In the Roman era, copper was principally mined on Cyprus, hence the origin of the name of the metal as Cyprium, “metal of Cyprus”, later shortened to Cuprum. When first installed copper oxide forms, replaced by cuprous and cupric sulfide, and finally by copper carbonate. The final green patina (termed verdigris) is highly resistant to corrosion.
